LIONS FALL SHORT IN LSC SEMIFINALS

ALLEN — Lions fall short in the LSC semifinals to West Texas A&M, 87-76, and conclude the 2012-13 season with a nine win improvement from last season.

The Lions scored the first three points of the game and did not trail in the opening seven minutes but once the Lady Buffs took a 12-10 leads off a Raven Gerald three pointer the Lions would not lead again in the half or the game. The lead got too as many as 20, 44-24 with 1:11 remaining after a Jordan Vessels jumper. A Symone Brown three-pointer and two La’Tisha Hearne free throws got the lead to 15 before Casey Land beat he buzzer to make it 49-26 at the break.

Hearne lead the Lions in the first half with eight points and two rebounds. Breanna Harris had six and five in the opening stanza. Brown added five points and three boards.

West Texas had three players in double figures. Chontiquah White led all scorers with 15. Devin griffin had 12 and Casey Land had 10.

The Lady Buffs extended their lead early in the second half. The largest was 27 at the 14:30 mark, 63-36. The Lions then tried to mount a comeback. A&M-Commerce outscored West Texas 41-13 over the last 14 plus minutes but could not overcome the deficit. The closest the Lions got was 11 points on multiple occasions but could not cut it to single digits.

Harris finished her 17th double-double of the season after a 22 point 12 rebound performance. Devin Oliver came off the bench with 19 points six rebounds. Hearne finished a double-double of her own with 10 and 10. Brown finished with 10 point on 4-13 from the field. Danielle Dixon finished with only six points on 2-14 from the field. Ashlee Johnson had four points, four rebounds and six assists off the bench. Sarah Blair hit a three pointer in the final of her last college game in a Lion uniform.

The Lady Buffs were led by Casey Land, who had 25 points to lead all scorers. White recorded a double-double with 24 points and 12 rebounds. Devin Grffin also finished with more than 20, with 21 and 13 rebounds.

The loss concludes the season for the Lions who had the best improvement in terms of win from last season in the conference. The Lions return a majority of this team for next season and will look to improve their 11 wins this season.

    Funeral services for Kelly Walker Jones of Sulphur Springs were conducted at 10 a.m., May 11, in the West Oaks Funeral Home chapel with Bro. Hoyt Scoggins officiating and Jay Porterfield assisting. Interment followed at Restlawn Memorial Park with Lance Looney, Grant Looney, Kyle Smith, Ryan Reed, Taylor Pace and Brad McFadden serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearer was Trey Elliott.
