Lions struggle from floor, fall to TexAnns

COMMERCE — Tarleton State showed why the TexAnns are the best shooting basketball team in the Lone Star Conference during a 79-51 victory on Saturday over the Texas A&M University-Commerce women.

The TexAnns shot 57 percent from the field in the second half to finish at 50.8 percent for the game (30-59), plus they shot 84 percent from the free throw line (16-of-19).

A&M-Commerce hit only 27.5 percent from the field (19-of-69) and 54 percent from the line (13-of-24) to drop to 6-9 for the season and 4-6 in conference play.

Kiara Wright, the conference’s leading scorer, pumped in 21 points and pulled down 13 rebounds to lead the TexAnns. Wright, whose older brother Kendall Wright plays wide receiver for the Tennessee Titans, went 8-of-9 from the field. The 6-1 junior from Pittsburg is shooting .626 from the field this season.

Peyton Adamson, a 5-7 junior from Rockwall, also fired in 17 points for the TexAnns after going 6-of-13 from the field and 4-of-4 from the line. Adamson is the top free throw shooter in the conference at 89.5 percent.

Keyra Johnson, who was 5-of-5 from the field, chipped in another 12 points for the 13-4 TexAnns, who remained atop the conference standings with a 9-2 record.

Breanna Harris produced a double-double to lead the Lions. The 5-11 junior from Mansfield Summit finished with 15 points and 14 rebounds.

Harris was the only Lion in double figures as Symone Brown was next with nine points and Aubree Butts, La’Tisha Hearne and Danielle Dixon all finished with six points.

A&M-Commerce never led as the TexAnns built an early 9-2 lead and were up 39-26 at halftime.

The Commerce Lady Tiger softball team celebrates a 6-4 victory over New Boston at the Northeast Texas Community College softball field in Mount Pleasant on May 10. The Lady Tigers will play number one ranked Pilot Point in the state semi-finals in a best two-out-of three series. Two games will be played on Friday, the first at 6 p.m. and the second at 8:30 p.m.; and a third, if needed, is scheduled for Saturday at 10 a.m.

    Funeral services for Kelly Walker Jones of Sulphur Springs were conducted at 10 a.m., May 11, in the West Oaks Funeral Home chapel with Bro. Hoyt Scoggins officiating and Jay Porterfield assisting. Interment followed at Restlawn Memorial Park with Lance Looney, Grant Looney, Kyle Smith, Ryan Reed, Taylor Pace and Brad McFadden serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearer was Trey Elliott.
