Allen —
Senior linebacker Danny Mason represented Texas A&M University-Commerce while suiting up for Team Texas in the 2013 Texas vs. the Nation All-Star Game at Eagle Stadium.
“It was a lot of fun, just everything that went on this whole week and getting this opportunity,” Mason said. “I feel blessed that I was chosen to be here and hopefully I represented myself and A&M-Commerce well. Hopefully this was just the beginning of bigger things to come.”
Mason appeared in roughly 45 percent of the Team Texas defensive snaps as well as on special teams. He tallied three tackles on the afternoon, including two solo stops, while notching an authoritative pass breakup in the fourth quarter against Maryland tight end Matt Furstenburg.
“It was a challenging week, definitely,” Mason said. “The coaches and scouts wanted to see different things from us and tried to take us out of our comfort zone. They had me playing a few different positions than what I was use to, but I think I did a good job of proving to them that I can do whatever they need me to do.”
Competing primarily with NCAA Division I seniors, it was a common sight to see Mason line up along side players donning helmets from Texas A&M, Oklahoma, Baylor, Texas, Northwestern, SMU and TCU.
The National team jumped out to a quick 17-0 lead early in the second quarter, with the Texas team cutting the deficit to 17-6 at halftime. Texas got to within four at 17-13, but a late touchdown sealed the decision for the National team, 24-13.
The Texas vs. the Nation is the final game of three all-star games sponsored by the NFLPA, including the Senior Bowl and the East-West Shrine Game. This was the sixth installment of the postseason all-star game as more than 93 percent of the previous participants have gone on to sign NFL contracts. With the victory today, the all-time series is now tied 3-3 between Texas and the Nation.
Mason will continue to train over the next few months as he has been invited to participate in the 2013 Beyond Sports Network Collegiate Showcase March 8-10 in Akron, Ohio.
