TWU snaps Lions’ three game win streak

COMMERCE — The Texas A&M University-Commerce volleyball team closed out its 2012 regular season road schedule with a trip west to Texas Woman’s University, but fueled on by a spirited home crowd, it was the Pioneers who prevailed, handing the Lions a 17-25, 19-25, 11-25 loss at Kitty Magee Arena. The loss ends a three-game winning streak for the Lions, who fall to 19-8 overall and 10-7 in Lone Star Conference play.

The Lions struggled to find their groove all evening, hitting just .108 compared to .364 for Texas Woman’s, including .458 in the first and .412 in the third. Rachel Robertson once again led the way with 11 kills and a block, followed by six from Breanne Snyder and four from Ezon Onditi.

Jordan Neal dished out 26 assists with seven digs and a pair of blocks with Michaela Spicer adding 12 digs to lead the Lions’ back row.

A&M-Commerce was looking for a fast start on the road and was able to match Texas Woman’s through the opening stages of set one. But near the midway point, the Pioneers began to find their groove, putting together an extended run to pull ahead late in the set at 23-17, then notched the final two points to take the opener 25-17. The Pioneers used a blistering .458 hitting percentage to take the victory, despite six kills from Robertson.

The Lions fought off an early deficit in the second set, pulling to within one at 13-12. But back-to-back blocks by the Pioneers sparked another rally for Texas Woman’s, outscoring the Lions 12-7 down the stretch to take the second 25-19. Snyder came up strong with four kills in the set, followed by three from Robertson.

With momentum on its side, Texas Woman’s put the nail in the coffin early in the third, using an 11-0 run to build a 15-5 lead and never looked back. The Pioneers continued to find the floor down the stretch, outscoring the Lions 6-1 over the final seven points to take the 25-11 victory and seal the 3-0 victory. Texas Woman’s sweeps the season series against the Lions and gives itself the tiebreaker for postseason seeding purposes, moving three matches ahead of A&M-Commerce in the conference standings.

The Lions will look to rebound with the final three games of the regular season at the Field House, beginning Friday when A&M-Commerce hosts Abilene Christian. It marks the final visit for the Wildcats to Commerce for the forseeable future, with the opening serve set for 7 p.m.
