The Commerce Tigers (2-1) couldn’t stop Princeton High School (3-0) quarterback Jourdan Blake, who threw for 258 yards and three touchdowns while running for 109 and another score. Junior quarterback Sam Wells threw for 250 yards and three touchdowns in the 38-29 loss to the Panthers. Senior Tigers’ wide receiver Buck Wilson caught nine passes for 167 yards and three touchdowns and added an interception on defense, but it wasn’t enough as Princeton out gained Commerce on the ground 161 yards to 66.
The two teams went into halftime tied at 21, but the Panthers managed to pull away from the Tigers with an 18 point third quarter.
Senior Panthers’ wide receiver Marquis Thomas rushed for two touchdowns and caught four passes for 65 yards, and senior wide receiver David McKinzie added 95 yards receiving and a touchdown. Senior defensive end Frankie Peters sacked Wells twice to lead the Princeton defense.
Sophomore running back Robert Jackson led the Tigers with 28 yards on five carries and a touchdown after rushing for more than 150 yards last week. Wells contributed 27 yards on the ground. Senior defensive back Josh Scroggins posted nine total tackles for Commerce, and senior defensive back Kavrin Massey added six.
Commerce will host Pleasant Grove (0-3) at 7:30 p.m. at Memorial Stadium as they look to get back on track.
