GREENVILLE —
The Commerce High School baseball team will be facing new opponents this year.
After moving down to 2A last year, CHS baseball coach Phil Burnett said he is looking forward to playing similar teams.
“We’ll be playing schools that are our size,” he said. “We got rid of some hard teams. I won’t miss Celina. For the last two years Celina beat us just by two runs.”
Burnett said most of the starters from last year are coming back this year, including Buck WIlson, Sam Wells, Josh McKeithen and Ramon Mojica.
“We lost only one senior and we had a good junior varsity for the last three-to-four years,” he said. “And Buck Wilson had a .554 batting average last year.”
Burnett said he expects two teams in particular, Edgewood and Grand Saline, to be the team’s toughest competition.
With 40 players on his roster, an experienced team and a new district, Burnett said his team has a good shot to win district.
“We should be able to compete well in the district,” he said.
The Tigers season begins on Feb. 18 against Leonard in Commerce. The junior varsity team plays at 4:30 p.m. and varsity starts at 7:30.
