Rams survive Lions’ scare by one point in LSC matchup

A&M-Commerce to take on ACU in homecoming game

San Angelo — Point after attempts, also know as PATs, can be very important, as Texas A&M University-Commerce (1-6, 1-4 LSC) found out last Saturday. The Lions took a 13-0 lead into halftime against Angelo State (4-4, 3-2 LSC), and they looked like they were well on their way to their second victory of the season. But the Rams managed to claw their way back thanks to a strong effort from running back Donavan Roberts (104 yards on 14 carries) and squeak by the Lions with a 17-16 victory.

A&M-Commerce got on the board in the first quarter when Kevin Vye, taking over for the explosive but inconsistent Deric Davis, connected with senior wide receiver Tevin Godfrey for a five-yard touchdown. Jacob O’Neil missed the extra point, and the Lions led 6-0. Vye, who led the Lions in rushing with 39 yards, scored again on a five-yard plunge and A&M-Commerce took a comfortable lead into halftime.

The Rams got their first points of the game when junior quarterback Blake Hamblin connected with junior wide receiver Dakari Pecikonis from three yards out. Running back Jermie Calhoun gave Angelo State their first lead on a three-yard touchdown run, and lead the Lions took back early in the fourth quarter when Chase Thrasher hit a 31-yard field goal to put A&M-Commerce up 16-14. Midway through the fourth, the Rams converted a 24-yard field goal attempt to take their final lead, 17-16.

Once again, the Lions struggled on the ground. Running backs Marcus French (36 yards on nine carries) and Wayne Chapman (17 yards on eight carries) were unable to find open ground, although Chapman did lead A&M-Commerce with 40 receiving yards.

Vye finished with 143 yards, one touchdown and one interception on 12-27 passing. Defensive backs Joel Wren, Marcus Fore, and defensive lineman Tristian Davis led the Lions with seven tackles, and defensive lineman Tevin Moore had one and a half sacks.

Hamblin also struggled for Angelo State, completed only 16 of 36 pass attempts for 122 yards and one touchdown. The Rams recorded 161 yards on the ground, and the Lions less than 100.

This Saturday, A&M-Commerce will take on Abilene Christian University in the Homecoming game. Kickoff is at 2 p.m. at Memorial Stadium.
