LIONS CLINCH SPOT IN LSC TOURNAMENT, BEAT CAMERON 65-58

COMMERCE — The Lions will be heading to the postseason after a scintillating 65-58 victory over Cameron. Breanna Harris recorded her 12th double-double with an 18 point 11 rebound performance and Danielle Dixon added 16 to lead the Lions to the postseason for the first time under head coach Nicole Anderson.

Cameron opened up a quick 10-5 lead in the opening four minutes with Chelsea Stamp and April Kindle making field goals. A three pointer by Stamp gave the Aggies their largest lead of nine at 18-9 with 13:24 left until half time. The Lions then started to chip away at the lead and then tied the game on a three from Danielle Dixon at 22 all. A&M-Commerce then stretched the lead out to seven at 33-26 after a free throw from Brianna Harris. Hannah Pollart made two free throws for Cameron just before halftime to make it 33-28 A&M-Commerce going into the half.

Harris led all scorers in the first half with 10 points. She also recorded six rebounds, one block and one steal. Ashlee Johnson had eight points and two assists. Danielle Dixon had seven points but was just 2-of-11 from the field. Symone Brown added five points and three rebounds. Devin Oliver had three points, two rebounds and two assists.

Lacy Reinke and Hannah Pollart each had six to lead Cameron. Ali Brown and Chelsea Stamp each had five for Cameron.

The Lions scored the first seven of the first 10 points of the second half pushing the lead out to 40-31 in the first four minutes. A Dixon lay-up got the lead to nine at 48-37 with 11:52; then Cameron went on a 12-2 run to cut the lead to one at 50-49 with 8:10 left in regulation. A Chelsea Stamp three-pointer tied the game at 52 all with 5:20 to play. Teams traded baskets on the next two possessions. Two Harris free throws made it 56-54 Lions then Ali Brown came back down for Cameron to tie it up again at 56. Back-to-back La’Tisha Hearne jumpers made it 60-56 Lions with 1:09 remaining. Dixon was fouled after Symone Brown grabbed a defensive rebound. Dixon then made both free throws to make it a six point advantage, 62-56, with 46 seconds remaining. Brittany Harris made two free throws for the Aggies to make it a four point game but an Ashlee Johnson free throw and a Harris offensive rebound on the second attempt sealed the win for the Lions.

A&M-Commerce is returning to the LSC tournament after a three absence. The last time the Lions made the tournament was in the 2008-09 season when they reached the semi-finals losing to Central Oklahoma.  This marks the first time in Nicole Anderson’s tenure at A&M-Commerce her team is headed to the postseason. The Lions can either be the seven or the eight seed as the remainder of the season plays out.

Symone Brown finished with nine points and 10 rebounds. Dixon had six rebounds and three steals to go along with her 16 points. Ashlee Johnson had a season high nine points, she also added four assists. La’Tisha Hearne finished with eight points and eight rebounds. Oliver finished with five points, four rebounds and three assists. The Lions continued their work on the glass outrebounding the Aggies 48-38 and 23-10 on the offensive glass. A&M-Commerce also held a 20-8 advantage in second chance points.

Jordan Kauk led Cameron with 14. Chelsea Stamp had 13 but was 5-of-17 from the field and 3-of-12 from behind the three point line. Ali Brown was also in double figures with 11 for the Aggies.

The Lions take the court next t home against the Lady Buffs of West Texas A&M on Wednesday at the Field House. Tip-off is set for 5:30 as part of a doubleheader with the men following. The Lions will look to avenge the loss they suffered in Canyon back on January 16th.
