West Texas A&M sweeps Lions

Basketball teams now a combined 8-38

COMMERCE — West Texas A&M came into the Field House Wednesday night and, like many Lone Star Conference members before them, beat both the men's and women's Texas A&M University-Commerce basketball teams.

The Lady Buffs crushed the women 78-61 and the West Texas A&M men's team maintained a comfortable lead for most of the game, defeating the Lions 70-60.

Both teams have three games left in the season and will travel to Portales, NM this Saturday to take on Eastern New Mexico.

    Serving as the host institution for the 2012 Lone Star Conference Championships, Texas A&M University-Commerce held its own agains their conference counterparts, finishing sixth in the standings with 54.5 points over the three-day meet.  
    15 Lions finished in the top-10 of their respective events over the weekend which included 11 new season-best marks along with five provisional qualifying marks being set.

  • Women's track and field team finishes in sixth at LSC Championships

    Competing on its home track, the Texas A&M University-Commerce women’s track and field team had a respectable showing over the weekend, accumulating 57 points to finish sixth in the 2012 Lone Star Conference Championships at Memorial Stadium.

  • Four A&M-Commerce women's track and field team athletes finish in top-10 at Michael Johnson Classic

    A handful of Lions competed at the 2012 Michael Johnson Dr. Pepper Classic at the Hart-Patterson Track Complex on the campus of Baylor University. Four A&M-Commerce athletes finished among the top-10 in three separate events, competing against some of the best athletes in the region.

    Competing against some of the top runners in the region, A&M-Commerce notched an impressive showing at the Michael Johnson Dr. Pepper Classic at the Hart-Patterson Track Complex on the campus of Baylor University. 10 Lions finished among the top-10 in their respective events, including a number of season-bests on the year.

    The Texas A&M University-Commerce Lions took the field for the last time this spring for the annual Blue-Gold game as they prepare to enter training camp later this summer. The offense ran seven sequences against the defense, scoring once. The defense also scored when junior defensive back Joel Wren returned a pass from junior quarterback Justin Gomez, a transfer from a California junior college, 95 yards for a touchdown.

  • Dr. Ron Newsome, former Lion coach, passes away

    The A&M-Commerce Athletic Department expresses its sadness over the loss of former Lion coach and A&M-Commerce Hall of Famer Dr. Ron Newsome, who passed away at his home on Tuesday, April 17. Newsome was 68.

    A&M-Commerce closed out the final round of the 2012 Firestone Lone Star Conference Championships right where it started, placing fifth in the final event of the 2011-12 season. The Lions posted a 13-over 301 over the final 18 holes, closing out the 54-hole tournament with a 30-over 894.

  • Tigers drop heartbreaker to Celina

    A flurry of errors cost the Commerce High School boys varsity baseball team from breaking their six game losing streak as they fell to Celina High School 11 to 10. The Tigers kept the game close, but lost the game on a double in the bottom of the 8th.

    Texas A&M University-Commerce took a night to recognize the accomplishments of its senior-athletes, hosting the 2012 All Sports Banquet at the Sam Rayburn Student Center Thursday evening.
