Nicole Anderson wins coach of the year

Allen — A&M-Commerce landed a pair of Lions on the All-Lone Star Conference teams, announced Tuesday evening by the conference office. Junior forward Breanna Harris earned second team All-Lone Star Conference honors while junior teammate Danielle Dixon was named an honorable mention selection. In addition, head coach Nicole Anderson was named the LSC’s Co-Coach of the Year after helping the Lions to an incredible improvement in 2012-13.

Harris provided consistent scoring for the Lions this season. She recorded double figure scoring efforts in 20 of the 25 regular games this season. Harris also recorded 14 double-doubles this season, that total puts her tied for 11th in all of Division II. She is averaging 15 points and 10.2 rebounds heading into the Lone Star Conference Tournament on Wednesday. Harris recorded a season high 30 points against Southern Arkansas in the season opener and grabbed 19 rebounds against West Texas. Her scoring average puts her fifth in the LSC and third in rebounding. Harris also leads the conference in offensive rebounding per game with a 5.2 average; she is the only player with over four per game.

Dixon has finished strong this season for the Lions. She is averaging 17 points over the last six weeks. During that stretch she recorded double figures in every game.  That is nearly quadruples her average before this streak of 4.4. For the season she is averaging 9.8 point per and 10.4 in conference play. Dixon is also averaging 4.4 rebounds and 1.8 steals per game. Her best performance was at home against West Texas with 26 points and nine rebounds.

Anderson joined Abilene Christian head coach Julie Goodenough as the Lone Star Conference’s Co-Coach of the Year after helping turn around the A&M-Commerce women’s basketball program. After winning just two games in each of the past two seasons, Anderson led the Lions to its first 10-win season and LSC tournament appearance since 2008-09 as her 10 overall victories and eight LSC wins mark a dramatic improvement from previous seasons.

It marks the first time since the 2008-09 season that A&M-Commerce has landed a pair of players on the All-LSC team. Head coach Nicole Anderson has now had three players tally four all-conference honors after Mattilyn McIntyre was a two-time second team selection.

Harris, Dixon and the rest of the Lions are playing in their first post season game since the 2008-09 season. The team is facing Abilene Christian in the Lone Star Conference quarterfinals, which began at noon at the Allen Event Center.
