A&M-Commerce basketball teams fall to Tarleton State

Women, men struggling in Lone Star Conference play

COMMERCE —

Texas A&M University-Commerce (6-10) was unable to sustain a strong first half and fell to Lone Star Conference heavyweights Tarleton State Texans (16-1) 73-69, despite a late comeback that saw them erase a 14 point deficit Wednesday night.

The A&M-Commerce women's basketball team (1-14) lost their 10th game in a row to Tarleton State (12-5) 89-6,1 despite a 20 point, 10 rebound effort from sophomore forward Breanna Harris.

    A&M-Commerce made the most of its final event of the regular season as eight different Lions place in the top-five in five different events at the Incarnate Word Last Chance Meet at Benson Stadium.

    Serving as the host institution for the 2012 Lone Star Conference Championships, Texas A&M University-Commerce held its own agains their conference counterparts, finishing sixth in the standings with 54.5 points over the three-day meet.  
    15 Lions finished in the top-10 of their respective events over the weekend which included 11 new season-best marks along with five provisional qualifying marks being set.

    Competing on its home track, the Texas A&M University-Commerce women’s track and field team had a respectable showing over the weekend, accumulating 57 points to finish sixth in the 2012 Lone Star Conference Championships at Memorial Stadium.

    A handful of Lions competed at the 2012 Michael Johnson Dr. Pepper Classic at the Hart-Patterson Track Complex on the campus of Baylor University. Four A&M-Commerce athletes finished among the top-10 in three separate events, competing against some of the best athletes in the region.

    The Texas A&M University-Commerce Lions took the field for the last time this spring for the annual Blue-Gold game as they prepare to enter training camp later this summer. The offense ran seven sequences against the defense, scoring once. The defense also scored when junior defensive back Joel Wren returned a pass from junior quarterback Justin Gomez, a transfer from a California junior college, 95 yards for a touchdown.

    The A&M-Commerce Athletic Department expresses its sadness over the loss of former Lion coach and A&M-Commerce Hall of Famer Dr. Ron Newsome, who passed away at his home on Tuesday, April 17. Newsome was 68.
