COMMERCE —
The Lions made sure late-game heroics were not needed by either side when Anitra Wright and Cadie Annett scored within the first 10 minutes and Callie Annett added one in the second half to give the Lions a 3-0 victory over Eastern New Mexico. The win brings the Lions within percentage points of the fourth place in the LSC standings.
Wright’s goal, her fifth of the season, in the fifth minute came off a feed from Brionna Minde from just inside the box and Wright beat the goalie to the left post to get the offense rolling for A&M-Commerce. Minde increased her assist total to seven on the season.
Less than five minute later Cadie Annett gained control of the ball near midfield and navigated through three defenders before depositing a shot in net. The tally was Cadie Annett’s second on the season.
The Lions offensive attack was sustained throughout the half and gave them a 10-3 advantage in shots and forced Xan Ortiz, Eastern’s goalkeeper, to make four saves. Callie Annett and Tareyn Blanton had back-to-back chances later in the half but Annett’s shot was blocked and Ortiz saved Blanton’s.
Just as in the first half, the Lions did not wait around to add to their lead. Callie Annett broke through after being turned away in the first half. Callie controlled a rebound off a shot by Blanton on the left side of the box and beat Ortiz to her far right post. Both Annett sisters, Wright, Makala Knabe kept the shots coming but were unable to to put another goal on the board.
The backend was led by Catie Hyde and Laura Heron and kept the Zias off the board and shutout the opponent for the second time this month. Tracey Rogers recorded four saves in the shutout. Three of her five wins are clean sheets.
A&M-Commerce falls to West Texas
The Lions (5-9, 4-7 LSC) were unable to pick up a victory over the first place Lady Buffs as they close out the home schedule for 2012. Leslie Briggs scored in the 15th minute for her 14th of the season. That turned out to be enough as the Buffs survived for the second straight game, 1-0.
After Briggs scored in the 15th minute the Lions had a golden opportunity to even the score when Brionna Minde got a breakaway shot that hit the crossbar after she beat the keeper and Callie Annett followed with a shot that was going to in but a defender from West Texas made the save to keep the one goal lead. At the end of the half the Lions had three corner kicks but were held without a shot.
The second half started with two more corner kicks for the Lions but once again they were held without a shot. The Lions were able to keep the pressure on with gaining possession in the midfield off goal-kicks from West Texas. Unfortunately, Buffs goalkeeper Yvette Bedoy turned shots from Anitra Wright, Cadie Annett and Minde away.
The Lions close out 2012 with three road games. The first will be against Abilene Christian in Abilene on Oct. 19. Game time is set for 4 p.m. in Abilene.
