COMMERCE —
New Texas A&M University-Commerce head football coach Colby Carthel had an impressive signing day, bringing in more than 35 recruits in addition to the dozens of players already on the roster. Carthel had said he is not done recruiting, and will look to bring in at least a dozen more new athletes.
It looks like Carthel is not limiting his search to local high schools. A&M-Commerce will hold open tryouts for current university students on Feb. 21, which will give students a chance to earn a spot on the spring roster.
There are some guidlines to follow, as outlined by a post on the university’s athletics website www.lionathletics.com.
In order to tryout, students must:
• Submit a physical from a licensed physician clearing them for athletic participation within the last six months.
• Submit a sickle-cell solubility test results on file or the corresponding waiver form available here.
• Sign the NCAA Division II Drug Testing Consent form available here.
• Show proof of good academic standing and enrollment as a full-time student at A&M-Commerce. Verification can be shown by presenting a copy of their current class schedule.
These four forms must be turned in to the football offices located in the Whitley Gymnasium next to the Field House before Feb. 21. Registration will begin at 11:30 a.m. at Memorial Stadium, and tryouts will begin at 12:30 p.m. Participants will need their own cleats and flats. Questions can be emailed to Carthel at colby.carthel@tamuc.edu.
