A&M-Commerce alumnus competes for chance to inhabit MLB Fan Cave

COMMERCE — Watching a Major League Baseball game can be a blast for some people, and cure for insomnia for others. But few fans, even the most dedicated, watch all of their favorite team’s 162 regular season games.

But that’s exactly what Texas A&M University-Commerce graduate Brian Boynton is competing to do. And he won’t just watch his favorite team, the Texas Rangers, 162 times. If he wins, he’ll watch every MLB game in the 2012 season: all 2,430 of them.

For Boynton, a lifelong Rangers fan who wants to get into sports broadcasting, the job would be a dream-come-true.

“It would be tremendous, because I would be able to live a dream,” he said. “Then I would be able to put that on a resume and use to find it another job. It would be a huge step in my career.”

The MLB Fan Cave, located in Greenwich Village in New York City, features 15 televisions where the winner of the MLB Dream Job competition will watch baseball games every day. The venue also hosts everything from concerts to visits from baseball players and celebrities. If he wins, Boynton will be responsible for recording his experience, interviewing players and celebrities, and sharing everything via various social networking sites.

Last year, Boynton created a super hero persona called Rangerman, and traveled from Dallas to St. Louis to watch Game Six of the World Series. He is the last Ranger fan still in the competition.

“Baseball is unlike any other sport,” Boynton said. “Any player on the roster could be the hero on any given day.”

The competition began with more than 22,000 applicants, and Boynton is in the final 50. After a voting round, which will end this upcoming Wednesday, the final 30 will got to Arizona for Spring Training. Eventually, the top six to eight will be flown to New York to compete for the final prize, which has yet to be announced.
