Lions picked third in soccer, men’s track in preseason polls

Football, women’s cross country picked last

COMMERCE — Preseason poll results were announced earlier this week fallowing the Lone Star Conference Media Day in San Antonio. The Texas A&M University-Commerce football was picked to finish last in the upcoming season, while defending LSC champions Midwestern State were selected to finish first. A&M-Commerce and Midwestern State will face off on Sept. 13 at Cowboys Stadium during the second annual Lone Star Football Festival. The Lions lost to Midwestern 63-17 in 2011. Abilene Christian and West Texas A&M round out the top three preseason selections.

The Lions will begin their 2012 campaign on Sept. 1 against Southeastern Oklahoma at Memorial Stadium. Kickoff is at 6 p.m.

ACU’s Mitchell Gale and Texas A&M-Kingsville’s Jeremy Aguilar were selected as preseason offensive and defensive players of the year. Gale threw for 3,823 yards and 28 touchdowns last season and has accumulated 9,127 yards and 76 TDs in his three years as the starter. With 11 votes, Gale edged Midwestern State’s Brandon Kelsey, who received nine votes.

Aguilar was last season’s LSC Linebacker of the Year. He led the Javelinas with 91 tackles last year while making 14 tackles for loss, 3.5 quarterback sacks and 11 quarterback hurries.

The Lions were selected to finish third in the women’s soccer preseason poll, receiving one vote to finish first. Abilene Christian and Midwestern State were picked to finish first and second. The Lions are coming off of a disappointing year that saw them finish 8-9-3 and fall in the semifinals of the LSC playoffs.

ACU’s Andrea Carpenter was tabbed Offensive Player of the Year, while Midwestern State picked up two of the awards with Defensive Player of the Year Hanna Staley and Goalkeeper of the Year Mallory Whitworth.

“All three were repeat selections and the clear choices in a vote of LSC head coaches and sports information directors, plus various media representatives from throughout the region,” according to a press release by the LSC.

The Lions were also picked to finish third in men’s cross country following Eastern New Mexico and ACU. A&M-Commerce was picked dead last in women’s cross country.
