Glenn Crain

Glenn Robert Crain, 52, died Dec. 14, 2008, in Bloomington, Ill., after a battle with cancer.

His children, Bryan, 20, and Nicole, 18, were by his side.

A military funeral was at 9:15 a.m., Dec. 31, at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, where he was born and spent a majority of his life.

He attended Southwest Texas State University (now Texas State), spent time as an interpreter and translator in the Far East while in the U.S. Air Force and graduated from UTSA in San Antonio. He worked as a computer analyst and section chief supervising 62 employees for USAA in San Antonio (a financial services association for active and separated military), and a similar job at State Farm Insurance in Bloomington.

Survivors also include his sister, Marilyn Crain Heath and husband John of Commerce; nephews John P. and Lisa Heath of Lufkin, Collin Heath and Alex Heath of Commerce; numerous other nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Vernon John Crain and Pat Crain of San Antonio, and brothers Larry (1975), Donald (1985) and Gene (2001).

After the memorial service, his children will finish school in Illinois and then return to San Antonio.

  • RALPH ABERNATHY

    Ralph Lane Abernathy, 79, of Campbell passed away May 15, 2012, at his daughter’s residence in Dallas. Services will be held at 2:30 p.m.  Sunday at First Presbyterian Church in Commerce with Rev. Mary Alice Lyman officiating. Interment will follow at Brigham Cemetery near Campbell. Coker-Mathews Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

    Dr. Kenneth Edgar Sheppard Jr. (aka Busty, Bubba, Dad, Doc, Maverick) was born Feb. 11, 1935, in the English Community near Clarksville, Red River County to Kenneth Edgar Sheppard Sr. and Ella Kathleen Storey Sheppard.

  • JAMES RIFFLE

    James H. Riffle, 88, of Commerce passed away May 6, 2012, in Commerce.
    James was born Dec. 21, 1923, in Ward, Ark. to Lillie Mae Lyons and John Daniel Boone Riffle. On May 14, 1954, he married Lillian Fulfer in Commerce. He was a self-employed mechanic.

    DE QUEEN, Ark. – Mary Melinda Margaret Simon Griffin, formerly of Commerce, died April 20, 2012, in De Queen, Ark.
    Mrs. Griffin was born Jan. 6, 1925, in Bellvue Hospital in New York City, the third of six children born to Newfoundland parents William  and Elizabeth Simon.

    Funeral services for Oma Greaves Thomas, 97, of Cumby, are at 2 p.m. today at the First United Methodist Church in Commerce with Rev. Valarie Englert and Rev. Marc Corazao officiating. Interment follows at Mt. Zion Cemetery.

    Buddy (J.H.) Nix Jr., 85, of Greenville passed away April 12, 2012, at Hunt Regional Medical Center. A memorial service was held at 4 p.m., April 15, in the Coker-Mathews Funeral Home chapel with Mr. Randy Daw officiating.

    Dale Rex, 79, of Ladonia passed away April 9, 2012, in Dallas.
    Dale was born in Commerce on March 2, 1933, to Willie Johnnie and Tinia Byers Whitefield  Rex. Dale loved riding back roads and watching deer.

    Bernice Woods, 88, of Wolfe City passed away April 4, 2012.
    Bernice was born in Roosevelt, Okla., on Sept. 12, 1923, to Ezell and Ida Johnson McBeth. She enjoyed sewing, cooking and renewing old furniture.

    A funeral services for Richard Lee (R.L.) Wood, 81, of Cumby will be held at the Brashear Baptist Church at 11 a.m., April 5, with Bro. David Burns and Bro. Harvey Snider officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow at Pleasant Grove Cemetery, east of Cumby.  Jones-Walker & Son Funeral Home in Commerce is in charge of arrangements.
