Ralph Lane Abernathy, 79, of Campbell passed away May 15, 2012, at his daughter’s residence in Dallas. Services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at First Presbyterian Church in Commerce with Rev. Mary Alice Lyman officiating. Interment will follow at Brigham Cemetery near Campbell. Coker-Mathews Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Born Aug. 5, 1932, in Linden, Ralph was the son of James E. “Jinks” and Bessie Lou (Bateman) Abernathy. On Aug. 15, 1952, he married Margaret Nell Ballard in Grand Prairie. He was a veteran of the United States Army and was a retired warehouse manager for Dal-tile in Tulsa and Oklahoma City. Ralph was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Commerce.
His survivors include his wife of almost 60 years of Commerce; son Stephen Abernathy and wife Debbie of Oklahoma City, Okla.; daughters Mary Glass and husband Dave of Dallas and Amy Emerick and husband Dave of Austin; brothers Bob Abernathy of Quitman and Jack Abernathy of Midlothian; a sister, Peggy Sellers of Arlington; grandchildren Casey Glass Wickham and husband Chris of Dallas, Megan Glass of Los Angeles, Calif., Jack, Will and Jeff Emerick all of Austin, Aryn Sherfield and husband Terry, and Mitchel and Brent Abernathy, all of Oklahoma City; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, James Abernathy.
Pallbearers will be sons-in-law Dave Glass and Dave Emerick and grandsons Will and Jeff Emerick and Brent and Mitchel Abernathy.
In lieu of flowers, the family request memorials be made to the American Cancer Society.
