Two Mount Pleasant businesses and a local Brookshire’s were hit by fraudulent check writers passing themselves off as Commerce city workers last week.
The three checks, all made out for a little less than $500, were cashed as City of Commerce checks.
According to Commerce City Manager Marc Clayton, he was notified of the fraud on Monday and reviewed the three fraudulent checks, which he said are easy to spot since the checks are not from the bank the city uses and the address on the checks does not exist.
Clayton said Commerce uses Alliance Bank exclusively and that any checks that have another bank listed are fraudulent.
Clayton also warned that there may be more out there, and for cashiers to use caution when accepting a check from someone they don’t know, even if the bank listed is Alliance.
“If there’s some doubt, then call the bank to verify the account number,” he said, adding that businesses can also contact the city’s accounting department.
If a business is presented with a fake check, Clayton is asking them to notify their local police.
