The Commerce Public Library taught free computer classes from Aug. 8 to Sept. 12 at the Commerce ISD Administration building.
Twelve people signed up for the class, which taught the basics and parts of a computer, how to use the mouse and keyboard, word processing, the Internet, and emails. Most of the students did not have an email address when they started the class; but by the time the course was completed, they had their own email address and the skills to use it.
The CISD Administration Office was very generous in providing a state-of-the-art computer lab, complete with a Promethean board. Gayle Gordon and Kathleen Stephens, of the Commerce Public Library, taught the six-week course using a curriculum from Web Wise Seniors.
These classes were made possible through the assistance of the University of North Texas PEARL (Promoting and Enhancing the Advancement of Rural Libraries) Project, funded by a grant from the Robert and Ruby Priddy Charitable Trust.
Since the demand was so high for this program, the Commerce Library will provide the classes again in January. There is a waiting list for the next course. Call 903-886-6858 or come by the library at 1210 Park Street to be added to the waiting list and to find out about dates and times.
