Citizens bid to end hunger at Meals on Wheels silent auction

COMMERCE — Citizens expressed a desire to end hunger in Commerce at the Meals on Wheels silent auction on Monday.

“This organization does a lot of good in Commerce,” Willie Blow, president of the Commerce ISD Board of Trustees said. “My hat goes off to them.”

Meals on Wheels President Luann Huffman expressed her thankfulness for the turnout of the event.

“With the economy we thought ‘oh dear,’ but it has been a great response,” she said. “But we have a lot more items this year than last. People have been just so generous.”

According to Ladonna Patterson, president of the Commerce Chamber of Commerce, fighting hunger is a fight worth having.

“I will always support functions that feed the hungry,” Patterson said. “No one should go hungry in America.”

Janet Peek, president- elect for Meals on Wheels, said even for a small town, donations were given in a big way.

“There is such a wide variety and extraordinary gifts for auction this year,” she said. “People are so generous in Commerce, so philanthropic.”

Blow said he enjoys working with Meals on Wheels and said he wishes to see more.

“This is such a great organization,” he said. “I only wish we had more volunteers.”

More than $12,000 was raised from the auction.
