A Commerce man, charged in connection with a reported Saturday night stabbing incident, will be spending Christmas in jail.
Kevin Darnell Hurndon, 45, filed a writ of habeas corpus from the Hunt County Jail, seeking a reduction in his $100,000 bond on a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
During a Wednesday morning hearing in the 354th District Court, Judge Richard A. Beacom appointed an attorney to represent Hurndon on the writ and reset the consideration of the bond for next Tuesday.
According to a report from the Commerce Police Department, officers responded to a call of a stabbing in the 200 block of Methodist Drive. Upon arriving at the apartment, officers found a 28-year-old male bleeding profusely who had been stabbed at least twice. The victim was initially transported to Hunt Regional Medical Center in Greenville with cuts to both arms and was later transferred to Parkland Hospital in Dallas because of the seriousness of the injuries officers reported. Officers at the scene were able to determine Hurndon as the suspect and he was taken into custody at an adjacent apartment complex in the 2400 block of Westgate after a brief search. According to witnesses, the suspect and the victim knew each other and had been seen arguing earlier that day.
Aggravated assault is a second-degree felony, punishable upon conviction by a maximum sentence of from two to 20 years in prison and an optional fine of up to $10,000.
