It was a busy weekend for Commerce police officers who arrested an individual for stabbing another man with a knife Saturday and arrested a second man following the execution of a search warrant Sunday that revealed illegal drugs.
A Commerce resident was taken into custody for allegedly stabbing another man with a knife on Saturday night, Commerce Police Chief Kerry Crews stated Sunday.
Officers responded to a call of a stabbing in the 200 block of Methodist Drive. Upon arriving at the apartment, officers found a white male bleeding profusely who had been stabbed at least twice.
The victim was initially transported to Greenville Presbyterian Hospital with cuts to both arms and was later transferred to Parkland Hospital in Dallas because of the seriousness of the injuries officers reported.
Officers at the scene were able to determine the identity of the suspect as 45-year-old, Kevin Darnell Hurndon of Commerce. He was taken into custody at an adjacent apartment complex in the 2400 block of Westgate after a brief search.
According to an affidavit and complaint filed, the suspect, Kevin Hurndon assaulted the man with a knife causing serious bodily injury to the victim’s arms. According to witnesses, the suspect and the victim knew each other and had been seen arguing earlier that day.
Commerce detectives are continuing the investigation and several witness have come forward to assist in the investigation officers reported.
Crews stated that because of the witnesses timely assistance and willingness to come forward, the suspect was quickly identified and apprehended. Hurndon is in Hunt County Justice Center being held on a $100,000 bond. The victim was listed to be in good condition Sunday night.
In a separate incident, A man was taken into custody following a narcotics search warrant on Sunday.
The search warrant was executed at a residence in the 900 block of Chestnut Street where officers seized narcotics, tools that officers said were commonly used in drug trafficking, and one hand gun. An adult male was taken into custody and is reportedly facing a charge of Second Degree Felony for Possession of a controlled substance between 4 grams and 200 grams in a drug free zone, because the offense occurred within 1000 feet of a school.
He reportedly also faces Class A Misdemeanors for Possession of a Dangerous Drug and Possession of a Controlled Substance Penalty Group 3 less than 28 grams.
The suspect remained in Commerce Police custody Sunday and was scheduled to transferred to the Hunt County Jail where he is expected to be charged Monday morning.

Sponsored by the Texas Association of School Boards, (TASB) the Media Honor Roll program recognizes reporters statewide for fair and balanced reporting of news about public schools. Media representatives from more than 470 Texas newspapers, radio and television stations and online publications were honored by their local school districts.

Commerce Lions event raises funds, helps children
On May 8, Commerce Lions Club held their 46th Annual Commerce Lions Club Carnival in downtown Commerce. Proceeds from the event went towards charities and projects they support, such as the Commerce Skatepark Project and vision clinics.

'Save the Library' meeting set for 7 p.m. May 17
The Commerce Public Library is holding a town hall meeting May 17 at 7 p.m. at City Hall. The meeting, titled "Save the Library" will discuss the necessary steps in resoring the 95 year old building to its 1972 condition, the year the library took the building over from the city. The library used to house the Commerce Post Office, which is now next door.
