A Commerce man has been indicted on a charge of aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon, in connection with a reported armed hold-up in the city.
The Hunt County grand jury returned the indictment last Friday against Eddie Charles Hines Jr.
According to a criminal complaint filed by the Commerce Police Department, Hines, 24, was alleged to have threatened to shoot and kill a man at a Commerce residence in June unless the victim paid Hines his monthly rent.
However, Hines was not connected to any property rental agency and the person whom he allegedly held at gunpoint is buying, not renting, his home.
No injuries were reported as a result of the incident on the evening of June 18, when officers were dispatched to a residence in the 1300 block of Hunt. The male victim told the officers Hines knocked on his door and told the victim he needed the next month’s rent.
The victim told the man he did not have the rent money, which resulted in Hines displaying a handgun and threatening to shoot. When the victim said he again told Hines he did not have any rent money, Hines was reported to have put the gun back into his pocket and told the victim he would be back the next day and would shoot and kill the victim if he did not have the money by then.
The victim later identified Hines from a photo line-up, which resulted in Hines’ arrest on Aug. 11.
Aggravated robbery is a first degree felony, punishable upon conviction by a maximum sentence of from five to 99 years to life in prison and an optional fine of up to $10,000.
