The Commerce Independent School District Board of Trustees gave their consent for Superintendent Blake Cooper to appoint a selection committee as part of the district’s Hall of Honor induction process when it met in regular session Monday night.
Board members voted unanimously to proceed with the selection.
“I think it’s a neat opportunity to recognize some of our alumni,” said Cooper.
The inaugural selection will include two CISD students, one student from Norris School and two CISD faculty/staff members. All Hall of Honor events will coincide with homecoming activities.
The board also gave its approval of a temporary change to the High School Handbook pertaining to the use of cell phones within the school. The change will remain in affect for the remainder of the 2009/2010 school year.
The change was requested by Virdie Montgomery, who is looking to start a voluntary program that offers kids incentives such as allowing students the use of cell phones and music players within the school in exchange for positive behavior.
“I see it as a tool in the classrooms and I see it as a tool for us to use as administrators,” said Montgomery. “It’ll be a volunteer program and we’re going to get each student who participates a Tiger Trust card with their picture on it.”
The Tiger Trust card lets the staff know that the student is in good standing with the rules and expectations of the school and therefore are eligible to receive certain incentives, including the use of cell phones and music players in the halls, during lunch and before and after school.
The Tiger Trust card can be taken away, along with the incentives that go along with the card, when a student breaks a school rule.
“If the program doesn’t work, we’ll scrap it, but I’d like to give it a try,” said Montgomery. “It’s just another tool for us to use to try to elicit good behavior.”
In other actions, the board:
The next regular meeting of the Commerce ISD Board of Trustees is scheduled for Jan. 19 at the Middle School library.
