Change to the charter?

Voters could be deciding on amendments to the way the city of Commerce operates in May 2010 if the city council approves recommendations from the Charter Review Committee.
The Commerce City Council received a presentation from committee chair Jason Cunningham, who brought several recommendations to the council during its regular meeting Tuesday night.
The Charter Review Committee began meeting in October at the request of the council to review the City of Commerce Charter. A total of eight meetings were held, with each meeting lasting roughly one hour, before the committee was ready for its presentation.
Cunningham highlighted some of the proposed amendments to the council, including one that would give the council the authority to remove its city manager by a three-fifths, rather than a four-fifths majority vote.
“Every vote on every article on every change was a unanimous vote,” said Cunningham.
Other changes address a council member’s forfeit of office, new regulations on the passage of ordinances and revolutions, and the annual budget.
Changes approved by the council will be placed on the May 2010 ballad for voter approval.
“In general terms, what we tried to do was to increase the flexibility available to the council,” said Charles Elliot, Charter Review Committee member.
The next regular meeting of the city council will be Jan. 12.
