Web update: Council to consider speed limit changes
Motorists could soon be required to comply with reduced speed limits on certain sections of Bryan Street and no parking on certain sections of Bryan and Cooper streets in Commerce.
The Commerce City Council is expected to consider the second readings of ordinances reducing the speed limits on portions of Bryan Street and no parking on certain sections of Bryan and Cooper streets during Tuesday’s regular council meeting.
The ordinances were improved during the first reading at the council meeting on Nov. 17. In order for the speed limit changes to go into effect, the ordinances must pass a second reading.
If passed, the ordinance pertaining to the speed limit on Bryan Street will reduce the section between Culver and Cooper Streets from 30 miles per hour to 25 miles per hour and the portion between Cooper and Stonewall streets from 30 miles per hour to 20 miles per hour.
Violation of the ordinance, if passed, will be a misdemeanor with a fine not to exceed $200.
The ordinance was drafted due to a request by Texas A&M; University-Commerce Police Chief Donna Spinato to assist with traffic control and provide a safe route for students.
The parking ordinance on Bryan Street, if passed, will prohibit parking on the east and west side of Bryan Street from Stonewall to Cooper and along the west side of Bryan Street from Cooper to Jackson. Violation of the ordinance will be a Class “C” misdemeanor with a fine not to exceed $200.
The Cooper Street ordinance will prohibit parking along the north and south side of Cooper Street beginning at West Neal and ending at Bois d’Arc. If passed, parking on that portion of the street will be a Class “C” misdemeanor with a fine not to exceed $200.
The council meets at 6 p.m. at city hall, located at 1119 Alamo.
