'All natural' art show

artist uses everyday objects for art assemblage

COMMERCE — Objects like a seashell from a beach, or a makeshift walking stick while on a walk in the woods can be used as mementos or keepsakes to remember events by.

Local artist Walt Davis used objects he has collected over the years to form a found-object assemblage at his art show on Jan. 10.

“I’ve been collecting this for years,” he said. “We have one that my wife and I think is a biography of Peter Marshall that termites had turned into their home.”

Davis held his show, Walt Davis’ All Natural: Watercolors exibit, inside A Space Art Gallery in downtown Commerce.

In his 25 years at the Dallas Museum of Natural History, Davis has had the chance to travel all across Texas, and his found-object assemblage is a testament to it. He has objects from the Panhandle to Dallas, and a piece of driftwood he found in Cooper Lake.

“I’m all about the natural stuff,” he said.

J.W. Smith, a Commerce Resident, said he enjoys seeing how people can turn anything into an art.

“It’s fantastic,” he said. “It’s really great to see people take things that they find and make a beautiful assemblage.
