Christmas in Commerce

Hundreds line streets of downtown to view holiday parade

COMMERCE — Doug Rohrabaugh, executive director of the Commerce Chamber of Commerce, said the Chamber of Commerce Christmas Parade on Dec. 6 was the biggest one yet.

“The parade was excellent,” he said. “The participation was great and we had so many participants this year. There were more people here for this parade than we had for our Bois d’Arc Bash parade.”

Rohrabaugh said he enjoyed seeing the Commerce Elementary School participate in the event as well.

“To see Commerce Elementary School showing up to the parade in their decorated bus, that was very encouraging,” he said.

More than 1,000 people lined the streets of the route to view the award-winning floats.

Commerce Fix and Feed won the “Grand Marshal” award for its float: Santa stuck in a chimney.

The “Best Themed Float” went to the Thalian Culture Club for a “Griswold Christmas” from the movie “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation.”

The “Best Vehicle” went to the Antique Car Club in Commerce and the “Most Creative” went to a Studebaker dressed up with blue penguins.

The winners of the two new categories were 1403 Bonham St. for “Best Decorated House” and T&M’s Convenience store, located on the corner of Monroe and Live Oak, won the “Best Decorated Business” award.

“We were really excited to see the downtown completely packed,” Rohrabaugh said. “And we hope to see even more next year.”
