Andrew Davis named first team Capital One Academic All-American

A&M-COMMERCE SPORTS A&M-Commerce sports

COMMERCE — A&M-Commerce senior forward Andrew Davis has notched quite a few accolades during his Lion career, but he may have topped himself as he was named a first team Capital One Academic All-American by the Collegiate Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

It marks the second-straight year that Davis has been recognized as an Academic All-American, earning third-team honors in 2011-12. It also marks the second-straight season that A&M-Commerce has produced a player on the Academic All-America first team as Desmond King was named to the squad in 2011-12 as well.

“We would need a whole hour to talk about what Andrew has meant to this program,” said head coach Sam Walker. “Andrew truly epitomizes what a student-athlete is all about, and what this program strives to teach to our players. He has consistently shown that you can be a contributor on the court as well as in the classroom and is a true role model for not only our players, but our fans as well. This is just the beginning of what Andrew will accomplish and we’re incredibly proud and honored he is a Lion.”

Davis has made a name for himself among the Lone Star Conference leaders this season as he currently is tied for the LSC lead in defensive rebounds per game (5.2) while ranking second in field goal percentage (56.8%) and is fourth in rebounds per game (7.0). Davis has played in all 24 games for A&M-Commerce this season with 20 starts and has already set career highs in points (214), rebounds (167) and blocks (9), putting together arguably his best season in a Lion uniform.

The 2012 Lone Star Conference Academic Player of the Year, Davis has continued to excel in the classroom, boasting a perfect 4.00 grade point average while majoring in finance. He has been a two-time Lone Star Conference Commissioner’s Honor Roll selection while being named to the President’s List every semester at A&M-Commerce. Davis has also been an active member of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee, serving as the SAAC co-treasurer in 2012-13.

To be eligible for Academic All-America consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director. The 2013 Capital One Academic All-America team was voted on by Sports Information Directors from across the nation.
