COMMERCE —
Voters living within several area cities will choose new city council members next month.
The cities of Celeste, Commerce, Hawk Cove, Quinlan and West Tawakoni will conduct elections on May 14.
In Celeste, Larry Godwin and Pat Jones are facing off for Mayor. Fred Reynolds, Cletus Holt and Jared Godwin are vying for two open council positions.
Commerce voters will choose two council members. Chris Hall and John Sands are facing off for the Place 1 council seat currently held by Tony Henry. Place 3 incumbent Richard Hill is facing challengers Ray Hunter and Michael Odom.
The City of Hawk Cove will have an election for two propositions, but not for council members. Proposition 2 calls for the creation of the Hawk Cove Municipal Development District and the imposition of a sales and use tax at the rate of one-fourth of one percent for the purpose of financing development project beneficial to the district.
On the city council, Mayor Billy Cosby and council member Dwayne Moore were unopposed in their re-election bids, and Del Earls will fill the other open position.
Voters living within the city limits of Quinlan will choose two council members. Chris Kiser and Carole Petty are facing off for the Place 2 seat, while Brandon Frazier and Donny Brock are seeking the Place 4 seat. Mayor R.W. Oliver was unopposed in his bid for re-election.
West Tawakoni voters will choose three council members next month. Gerald Rosebure and Chuck Calkins will face off for the Place 1 seat. Alan Shoemake and Bill Creed are vying for the Place 3 seat, while Paul Norris, Winston Dennis and Michael Adams are seeking the Place 5 seat.
However, the cities of Caddo Mills, Lone Oak and Wolfe City will not conduct elections next month.
In Caddo Mills, Mayor Dwayne Pattison is unopposed in his bid for re-election and John Lovett is unopposed in his bid for a council position. An additional council member position will be appointed by the council.
In Lone Oak, incumbents Larry Osborn, Mona Collins, Gordon Galloway and Wes Owen were unopposed in their bids for re-election.
The City of Wolfe City will not hold an election as the number of applicants matches the number of vacancies. Mayor Bryan Creed was unopposed in his bid for re-election, as was council member Barbara Woodruff. Robert Vetter, Skipper Creed and Julia Wensel will fill the other vacancies on the council.
Early voting begins May 2 and runs through May 10.
