Highway work affects elementary school

Temporary entrances at A.C. Williams

Commerce Journal

COMMERCE — Monday’s first day of school at one Commerce elementary school was affected by highway construction efforts in the area.

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has announced its contractor, DL Lennon, is currently at work to improve State Highway 11 in Commerce from about a quarter-mile north of Loop 178 to about a quarter-mile north of the Hopkins County line.

Crews are reported to be working in Phase 2 of the project, constructing half of the proposed roadway to a curb and gutter section, which includes the installation of a storm sewer pipe.

As of Monday morning, temporary driveways for the new A.C. Williams Commerce Elementary School were to be in place. The driveways will be constructed out of recycled asphalt pavement that will provide a hard and smooth surface from the highway to and from the school.

Contractor operations will be primarily to the east of the school. Permanent concrete driveways to the school will be constructed later in the contract.

Motorists are being asked to exercise caution and obey all warning signs in the work zone.

The anticipated completion date for this project is June 2012.
