COMMERCE —
The resurfacing of Culver Street from Highway 224 past Monroe Street has taken longer than some Commerce citizens expected. After milling the road for resurfacing and overlaying a portion of the road, the Texas Department of Transportation has spent the last few weeks working on curbs, leaving Commerce drivers to deal with the various lane closures and rough road surface. According to Commerce City Manager Marc Clayton, the contractors are still within their approximately 60 day limit to complete the project.
“The resurfacing is a TxDot project, but I did send my police chief to their pre-construction meeting,” Clayton said. “They began construction on July 28, and have 63 days to complete it. I do wish they had waited until after the first week of school to begin milling.”
Once TxDot starts overlaying, the process should not take long, according to Clayton.
TxDot told the city of Commerce that they could put out for bid a sidewalk project that would build sidewalks along Culver to the new A.C. Williams Elementary building. The council will discuss authorization of the project in the Sept. 18 city council meeting.
Construction on Harlow Road has resumed after the contractors received materials that were on back order. Harlow road is the first of a $4.8 million construction project to repair six Commerce streets. Texas A&M University-Commerce and the Texas Water Development Board both contributed approximately $1 million to the project. In 2008, Commerce voters approved approximately $3 million in bonds for the road repair, which will probably take three years to complete according to Clayton.
