Two stores sell to minors in tobacco sting

Commerce Journal

COMMERCE — Officers with the Commerce ISD and Greenville police departments conducted a minor tobacco sting operation within the city limits of Greenville April 19.

A minor attempted to buy tobacco at 36 local retailers. Two local stores sold tobacco products to an underage operative, police said. Earlier this year four stores sold to a minor attempting to buy tobacco.

The Greenville Police Department noted more businesses are checking ID’s and not selling tobacco to minors, which indicates enforcement efforts are working.

Selling tobacco to a minor is a Class C Misdemeanor and punishable by a fine of up to $500 plus court costs.

Locations where tobacco was sold to the minor were Wal-Mart, 7401 Interstate 30 and Expressway, 4303 Joe Ramsey Boulevard.
