Guilty pleas in assault, animal torture cases

COMMERCE — A Commerce man has been placed on probation, fined and sentenced to jail after entering guilty pleas to charges of family violence and animal torture.

Joaquin Jabar Crowder pleaded guilty Wednesday during a hearing in the 196th District Court to one count each of assault/family violence with previous conviction and cruelty to non-livestock animals/torture.

Under a plea bargain arrangement Crowder, 33, was placed on 10 years of probation on the animal cruelty charge, with a $300 fine and 90 days in jail; and was placed on five years of probation on the assault/family violence charge, with 180 days of community service and another $300 fine.

Crowder was also ordered not to have any weapons or pets in the future.

Crowder was alleged in the indictments to have grabbed a female victim around her neck on Oct. 29, 2010 and to have shot a dog with a BB pistol on Dec. 27, 2011.

The alleged victim in the assault/family indictment, which listed a 2006 misdemeanor family violence conviction against Crowder, had previously filed a non-prosecution agreement in the 2010 case.

Crowder was facing a maximum sentence of up to 10 years in prison and an optional fine of up to $10,000 for a conviction on either of the charges.
