It’s obvious to anyone who walks through their doors that the Kilted Monkey, located on Live Oak Street, is unique to Commerce. A pub-style restaurant with 11 craft beers on tap and 25-30 in the bottle, the Kilted Monkey offers traditional pub fair, like fish and chips, along with burgers, sandwiches and steaks.
“We’re the only restaurant in Commerce that offers fresh oysters on the half-shell,” co-owner Joanna Izzarelli said.
The Kilted Monkey replaced Izzy’s Cakes, also owned by Izzarelli. After three years of operating the restaurant, Izzarelli and her co-owner Rusty Massey decided to shut down Izzy’s and remodel, which took two and a half months.
“Pubs are doing well in the larger cities, and with the college being here, we thought we would tap into that market.” Massey said.
While the restaurant does embrace the pub theme, the Kilted Monkey is not just for college students.
“It has a family atmosphere,” Izzarelli said. “Families can bring their children.”
While the restaurant had a soft-opening, the response from the community has been good according to Izzarelli.
“The response has been fabulous so far,” she said. “There aren’t a lot of other healthy options in Commerce for eating. Pub food isn’t necessarily healthy, but there are healthy options on the menu.”
The Kilted Monkey also serves some of the salads and sandwiches Izzy’s customers are used to, and some of the soups will be on the menu soon.
The restaurant features a bar, three televisions and a dart board. An outside patio area should also get a T.V. in the near future. The Kilted Monkey is open Sunday through Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., Thursday and Friday from 11 a.m. to midnight, and Saturday from 11 am. to 1 a.m. For more information, find them on Facebook or call 903-886-4800.
