Pulling his own weight

Crosby does it all for Commerce

COMMERCE — Commerce High School junior Cortez Crosby is an intimidating figure at first glance. A powerful athlete who both anchors the Tiger’s defensive line and leads their powerlifting squad, he is a mass of muscle and brawn who routinely outlifted heavier competitors from larger schools this spring.  Crosby finished first in powerlifting meets in Anna, Brownsboro, Rains, Paris and at the All Region, Division II meet. He also received numerous accolades for his work on the gridiron, including All-District, All-Region, and All-DFW nods from numerous media outlets.

Talking to him-one on-one however, Crosby is soft-spoken and polite, enthusiastic about the sports he plays.

“I play them all, but I enjoy football the most,” he said. “Last year, making the playoffs was an amazing experience, and we’re hoping to go even farther this year.”

Crosby, who weighs close to 250, recently moved up a weight class in power lifting, which allows him to bulk up while lifting against heavier opponents.

“I’m at the bottom of a high weight class, so I can actually eat and work out more instead of starving myself,” he said. “I work out everyday, but I have to make sure to not overdo it so that I’m ready for Saturday [powerlifting competitions].”

Crosby has received interest from some Division I and Division II schools, including Lone Star Conference teams. Family friend and mentor Ben Peak is helping Crosby prepare for college, sifting through offers from colleges to come play football while trying to garner interest from Division I schools.

“There have been a few DI schools that have expressed interest,” Peak said. “Iowa State, Memphis and most of the Lone Star Conference have sent letters, and we’ve talked with the coaches here at A&M-Commerce and they seem interested.”

But Crosby is only a junior, and will have plenty of opportunity to talk directly to schools, starting in the middle of April, including his dream school.

“I’d love to go to the University of Texas,” he said.

  • Neverblu hits mark with ‘Joshua’ release

It takes some guts to put out an alt. rock album these days. The genre is more closely associated with the inauthentic machismo of Nickelback than well-crafted, thought-provoking music. But that’s exactly the kind of record Dallas-based Neverblu created with their most recent release “Joshua.”

Poll

It was announced that A&M-Commerce was not allowed to have a blue field with gold lettering because Boise State University has a patent on blue fields. Would you have liked to seen a blue Memorial Stadium?

Yes. I think it would have helped the school spirit and brought more people to the games.
No. a blue field would only distract the players.
