Soldier's pet needs a home

A very special dog in Commerce needs a home.

When Commerce animal control officer Kat Walsh came to work Monday morning, she found a young man sitting in his truck with an Army backpack in the seat next to him.

“I thought maybe he had just came back from serving our country and was looking for a dog,” Walsh said. “Well when he came in he had a cat in his hands and a dog by his side. I asked if I could help him and he told me he was getting deployed to Iraq. He was getting on a plane tonight, going out for 18 months and had to give up his animals.”

The soldier told Walsh that Max, the cat, was litter box trained and very sweet loving cat. Patches, the dog, was doing real good on her house training and loved to go on rides or just anywhere he was.

“As I watched him fill out the paperwork my heart just dropped, thinking of how young he was – early 20s – and hard it must be to leave your family and pets,” Walsh said. “So I promised him I would do everything I could to find good homes for his animals. I thanked him for his hard work and sacrifice for giving up part of his life for my freedom, told him to be careful out there and that I would pray for him. He Thanked me and left.”

Walsh was able to find a home for Max with one of the family’s at her church but is still seeking a home for Patches.

“I told him I would not stop until I found his pets good homes. We need someone for Patches,” Walsh said.

Anyone interested in adopting Patches can contact the Commerce Animal Shelter at 903-886-1160.
