At their monthly meeting on June 22, American Legion Post 1 received a first-hand report from the two high school students they had sponsored to attend the 2009 Boys State. The students, Nigel Beene and Nathan Venable gave some insights to Boys State and some of the experiences they encountered. Both boys related their amazed enlightenment at staying in a dormitory on the University of Texas campus. They discussed some of the points of politics to which they were exposed and some of the sights they saw, particularly at the Capitol. Both noted that Governor Rick Perry made an appearance. Beene also related he had run for the office of county clerk and was elected to that position.
Boys State is an American Legion-sponsored educational program to assist young people in understanding the ideals and objectives of American government and to appreciate the basic principles involved in successful management of a democratic society. The youth stay for one week at the University of Texas and are recommended by their school counselor for participation at Boys State.
Beene was accompanied to the meeting by his father, Will Beene, and Venable was accompanied by his mother, Nell Venable, and his two sisters.
