Chamber news — a successful swap

Commerce businesses and residents may have noticed the influx of traffic to downtown on the 20th of June.

The first Swap-In-Commerce appears to have been quite a success according to the 40 plus booth space renters and weekend bargain hunters. Vendors arrived before daylight at the Farmer’s Market located on Bonham Alley in downtown Commerce to set up and display handmade crafts such as lariat rope bowls, decorative wooden crosses, western mirrors adorned with horseshoes, and handmade jewelry.

The containers of live flowers glistening in the morning sun were the first items completely sold out Saturday.

Puppies found new homes at the Swap while bargain enthusiasts’ arms overflowed with kids’ clothes, house wares, furniture, tools, and more from the many rummage sale booths.

Soft drinks and water was available from the kids at Cowboy Church raising money for church camp that they hope to attend later this summer.

Fresh produce was available to purchase from local farmers and a trailer load of watermelons had been reduced to a mere few by noon.

The morning weather was enjoyable with a breeze that helped cool the air and bring in a steady crowd of shoppers until the heat became unbearable in the early afternoon. The overall atmosphere at the Farmer’s Market was electrified by the sellers and those coming into downtown Commerce to see what bargains were awaiting them.

All in all, people were excited about the Swap being held and anticipate more in the future.

The Swap-In-Commerce committee would like to offer a big thank you to DSK Construction for coming to our aid with the accurate marking of the booth spaces, the City of Commerce for the trash containers and allowing us to use the Farmer’s Market, and to each of you that either was a vendor or a shopper for helping to make this event a success.

The Swap committee plans to hold more Swaps in downtown Commerce, for more information and dates contact the Chamber at 903-886-3950 or visit the website at www.commerce-chamber.com, updates will also be listed in Commerce Journal, and KETR radio.
